Hone Your Skills in the Batting Cage
By Matthew Proctor
Batting cages are rectangular enclosed structures that allow a baseball or softball player to practice their batting skills without the fear of hitting innocent bystanders or of losing costly baseballs. These cages are typically made with netting or fencing. Many batting cages are built on a slope; the batter stands on the higher end and the pitching machine (or pitcher) on the deeper end so when the batter hits the ball so they collect near the base of the machine or automatically feeds back into the machine. The speed of pitching machines can be adjusted from 30 miles per hour to 90 miles per hour.
Besides the advantages of batting cages stated above, they also allow more than one batter to practice within a confined space. In addition, with the use of a pitching machine players can consistently bat. The common saying "Practice Makes Perfect" can be applied here; the more you practice at batting one ball after another, the better you will be.
Cages to bat in can be found with a quick flip through a phone book or online search. They are typically found at sports arenas or local adventure/fun parks. They can be rented for a set of pitches or at an hourly rate in the range of 30 to 40 dollars a session. Many cage arenas offer weekday and weekend specials for larger groups of people, such as a baseball team.
If you are looking for a more permanent solution to sharpen yours or your teams batting skills there are many options open to you, whether you are operating on a budget or the sky is the limit. There are many different types of cages available such as portable, netting, institutional, etc. You can get packages with the frame, net, and everything included in the price or you can custom build a baseball cage to fit your needs and budget. They can be made for the outdoor, indoors, or both.
Let's look at a two examples of batting cages that fall on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. First, there is the CubeCage sold by Battingnets. This batting cage is a freestanding frame that can be used indoors or outdoors. The standard Baseball Package is 72'L x 15'W x 12'H and costs $1,875.00. This batting cage is the real deal and is the top-of-the-line. Next, let's look at the Flexcage (a netted cage) sold by Practicesports and costs $427.00 after savings (retail price $460.00).
The #21 Deluxe Poly Batting Cage Net: 35'L x 14'W x 12'H is best used for the family setting or youth and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Of course, these are just some examples. There really are batting cages out there that suit every need imaginable.
