Baseball - The 5 Tool Player

By Michael Russell

You hear talk about somebody being a 5 tool baseball player. These athletes are very few and far in between. Five tool players are the highest paid players in the game if you can even find them. But what exactly is meant by a 5 tool player? How do you know when somebody actually fits this description? We're going to present the basic definition of what a 5 tool player is and why these are such a rare breed.

A 5 tool player is one that has great speed, can hit for average, hit for power, a great throwing arm and is excellent defensively. Let's take a look at each of these separately.

Players with great speed are hard enough to find. Most of these are usually lead off hitters because they are needed to get on base and steel bases in order to get into scoring positions. Most lead off hitters are mostly contact hitters and don't hit for much power. So right there, finding somebody with great speed and somebody with power is already hard enough.

But then we get to somebody who can hit for average. This is something that can easily be linked together with just about any of the other tools but one, hitting for power. In order to hit for power, you have to either be incredibly strong or swing the bat very hard. When you do this, it is hard to hit for average because you are more prone to striking out a lot. Most power hitters strike out over 100 times a year. These people usually don't hit for a high average.

Then of course there is the person who just hits for power alone. This is not very common by itself. Take a look at the list of home run leaders in the major leagues and you'll see that out of the hundreds of players that play the game the list isn't any more than a dozen or so. Therefor, finding somebody who hits for power by itself is not an easy task. Finding speed, power and the ability to hit for average is very rare. And that's only 3 tools.

Then we come to fielding. Defense is something that requires a lot of practice. They talk about somebody having soft hands. That's a person who catches just about anything hit to him no matter how hard. The great fielders in the game defensively are a select few by themselves. Now add that to the other 3 tools and the list narrows even more.

But we're still not done. Then there is the matter of a player's throwing arm. Most of your best throwing arms are actually pitchers because they need to be able to throw hard to get hitters out. Pitchers certainly don't hit for power. Many short stops and third basemen have good arms but very few of them hit for power, let alone have all 5 tools.

So as you can see, a 5 tool player is indeed a rare breed. So many power hitters are very big and therefore very slow. Tall, thin, fast players don't usually hit for power. And yet, there have been a number of 5 tool players in the game of baseball, including Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds.

So, You Want to Build Your Own Baseball Or Softball Training Facility? Part 1 of 3

By John Peter Pero

JP Note:

This is a very long article with some great ideas. Due to its length, It has been divided into 3 specific area of interest.

PART 1 - An Overview
PART 2 - Standard Components
PART 3 - Important Food For thought

PART 1 - An Overview

Why There Is a Need

The numbers of young ballplayers and the yearly growth of travel baseball and fastpitch softball have created a shortage of indoor training facilities in many or even most parts of the country.

The attendance in MLB (majors) and MILB (minors) has risen for the past 4 seasons as of this writing, the CWS (College World Series) is now a primetime ESPN event as is the MLB 1st year players draft each June... so we know the shear numbers of players who want to make this their prime sport is indeed growing and the future in baseball and fastpitch softball is growing.

Don't Forget Girls Fastpitch Softball

As players play more and better competition, the High School teams have become more competitive so it is the trained ballplayer, not just the better athlete who makes the team and continues on to the next level.

There is no McDonalds or Wal Mart in the training field, so certainly it is left to entrepreneurial-types who have "the baseball bug"... that passion for this game of ours that seldom if ever leaves us.

There is a very good chance that this describes you in some way (who else would be reading an article of this title) .

Can We Help You?

We began supplying various components for new and existing training facilities in 1999 and now help out new and perspective owners with most aspects of these ventures.

Along the way we have learned a lot from these experiences and the many owners who have become our friends and business associates.

We launched our "Pro Division" in 2005, headed by our own Coach Arnald Swift, a 34 yr coach (retired) and can now offer you a fulltime, seasoned professional in this field... and believe me, there is no industry of experienced professionals who do this... just scattered companies who offer various parts and pieces.

The Core of a Successful Facility... an improving return customer!

There are a finite number of ballplayers within your local geography in any given season. Your facility cannot exist for long without those customers wanting to return again and again. If they are happy about being there, they have a better chance of improving. If they improve, it stands to reason that they will be happier to come back... which fuels their future improvement and successes... a circle that you can easily see.... and so many have younger siblings who of course want to emulate their bigger brothers and sisters too!

Interested Coaches and a Sound Building-Block Approach!

The happy, improving player receives maximum benefit from organized, structured, weekly instruction from a "reasonably qualified" coach who knows his own curriculum and cares whether the player actually does improve!

I feel that coaches, like players must be interested and passionate about teaching and helping players reach their goals to truly help players improve, though more playing and coaching experience certainly can add to the student's experience.

I also feel that an organized building block teaching approach is actually more important than the pedigree of the coach... especially when teaching the younger levels where strong mechanics and fundamentals must be committed to muscle-memory first... in order for the player to stay around long enough to take on the more sophisticated training aspects that older players will eventually be learning.

The Common Products Found In Facilities

Here are the components found in most training facilities:

Batting cages, some of which share duty with pitching tunnels, barrier netting, turf floor covering, homeplate stance mats, mandatory if cage floors are not turfed, highly recommended if they are, L screen pitcher protectors with very heavy nets, highest quality adjustable batting tees, a supply of machine pitch dimple balls, and a good quality leather practice ball, misc items from a few batting helmets, a set of catchers gear and a mitt or two, to a few fungo bats and various mid-grade wood and aluminum bats. Video software and a small room for viewing can be added later when opening budgets are stretched.

Yankees Vs Phillies World Series Preview

Batting Cages Direct

By Ken McCormick

Two baseball powerhouses are meeting up in the Fall classic, making this World Series destined to be a special one. The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies both came into the 2009 season with very high expectations.

The Yankees had signed some major names to the team's roster, including the likes of ace pitcher CC Sabathia and another premier pitcher in AJ Burnett. Hitting additions like Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher also added to the depth of the team's bats.

This combined with a new stadium led the Yankees to believe that this was the year that things would be different. And it was for New York.

In Philadelphia, the team had a World Series to defend, and some major additions to the pitching staff, notably Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez, made it seem that Philadelphia was destined for another World Series appearance.

The bats in Philadelphia are no joke either. With Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and a handful of other big names, this team sure knows how to hit the ball.

This is going to be a really interesting World Series. No one's quite sure as to whether it'll come down to great hitting (which both teams are capable of) in the end, or great pitching.

Personally, I believe that we're in for some high scoring affairs, and it should be really entertaining to watch these two teams battling it out night after night.

The Yankees might be slightly favored because of their regular season consistency and their big roster names, but the Phillies can't be counted out by any means. This was a team that started out relatively slow last year, and got hot to close out the season. This all led to a World Series in the end.

This World Series will be really exciting to watch. With no heavy favorite, fans will look for any clues they can get early and often.

If you're looking for a great way to watch the game in digital quality, Satellite Direct can be a great option. For a one-time payment and no monthly fees, you'll have thousands of TV stations instantly. Read a Satellite Direct review at http://satellitedirectreview.com.

Bat Weight is Extremely Important For Successful Baseball Hitting

By Larry Cicchiello

Not having the proper bat weight is an extremely common problem, especially with younger baseball players.

Much too often, they have the improper bat weight and almost always it's because the bat is much too heavy! It also happens occasionally with older players also.

Here is a Guideline to Help Determine the Proper Bat Weight to Use:

Grab the bat at the very end, holding just the knob and using all your fingers. Use your right hand if you are a right-handed hitter or left hand if you are a left-handed hitter.
While still holding the knob only, extend your arm and the bat out in front of you, with your palm facing up.
In other words, the distance from your shoulder to the end of the barrel of the bat should be about 5 or 6 feet.
Hold the bat for about five seconds and if your hand quivers, the bat is probably too heavy. If your hand remains fairly steady, your bat weight is probably okay.

This is just a guideline but your actual swings at the plate should be your truest and most reliable indicator as to proper bat weight.

If you're usually getting the bat around quickly enough on average or slightly above average fastballs, there is a very good chance that you are just fine.

You can also see what weight the rest of your teammates are using.

Usually the difference among players on a team is only an ounce or two.

So, you should be in the ball park already. No pun intended.

So it's really only fine tuning it by an ounce or so to your personal preference.

If you are going to err, make sure you err on the side of the bat weight being too light instead of the weight being too heavy!

Having a little "less bat" than you can handle is a very minor problem and is far superior than having "too much bat" and being constantly late on every pitch, where you will have NO chance for a successful at bat.

Bat Speed Training For More Power

Visit the Baseball 2Day Coaching Journal

By Alan Bryan

Using bat speed training can help you quickly gain an additional thirty to even one hundred feet in your power. The most common refrain in hitting is that it is not how hard you swing, rather, how quick your swing. Simply, it is the laws of physics that apply to hitting, as the velocity of the bat connecting with the ball determines the distance a ball will travel.

There are many bat speed training methods that can help you increase your velocity. However, despite all the great training out there, selecting the right bat is also a factor. Most bat speed drills should be done with a wooden bat. With the new, technologically advanced aluminum bats allowing for more error in your swing, many hitters have become dependent on technology rather than practice to hit for more power.

Simply, there are no soft hitting zones in the new aluminum bats. A wooden bat, however, has a very defined sweet spot, and when you miss that sweet spot, the wooden bat will let you know by either shattering or stinging your hands tremendously. Learn how to properly get the head of a wooden bat through the hitting plane, and you are one step closer to hitting for more power.

Effective bat speed training involves several components, some of which are not directly baseball related at all. In additional to practicing with wood bats, you should also strengthen your wrist and lower body using light weight resistance. Putting it all together can help you start hitting for more power in record time.

Effective bat speed training can take your game to the next level by increasing your power and average. When used correctly, bat speed training techniques are extremely effective. Learn the best training methods, recommended by professional scouts, by visiting http://www.batspeedtraining.info.

Baseball Tips on Hitting - Hitting the Ball to the Opposite Field

By Larry Cicchiello

By now, we've all heard the expression, "hit it where it's pitched." It's very frustrating for a pitcher when he throws a perfect low and away strike and the batter hits the ball the opposite way for a hit. Most pitchers will make a mental note of it and know how well schooled the hitter is. Low and away strikes are almost always a pitcher's bread and butter and the very smart hitters will learn how to take some of the effectiveness of the low and away strike away from the pitcher. It's pretty much a baseball fact of life that if a hitter tries to pull everything, his batting average will suffer. It's also a baseball fact of life that hitters who hit effectively to the opposite field have a strong tendency to hit for higher batting averages.

When Hitting To The Opposite Field. The first order of the day is to avoid the common baseball hitting mistake of letting up on your swing. Many hitters will not swing as hard when going the opposite way. Their swing quite often loses its aggressiveness and this should be avoided. The hitter should attack the ball in the same manner as if it were a very hittable pitch that's belt high and over the middle of the plate. When you are trying to hit the ball to the opposite field, preferably you want the pitch over the outside part of the plate. The angle of the bat should be facing toward the opposite field. One of the best baseball tips on hitting to the opposite field is that you make contact with the ball deeper in the hitting zone. Contrary to what some may believe, you use the same exact swing that you always use. The only difference is you hit the ball when it is closer to the catcher.

Pitchers are not thrilled with hitters who use all fields and can efficiently hit the ball to the opposite field. As a hitter, you don't want pitchers to be thrilled when you are at bat. Just remember to attack the ball with the same aggressiveness, have your bat angled toward the opposite field and let the pitch travel and get a little closer to the catcher. There is a serious link between hitters who can do this and higher batting averages. It is not a coincidence.

Finding Quality Batting Cage Equipment

By Jason Gluckman

Batting teams use batting cages to sharpen batting skills. As with all sports equipment, it is important to assess your needs and budget before determining the best batting cage equipment for you and your team.

Batting cage equipment can be purchased through many sporting goods stores and suppliers. In addition, batting cage equipment can be ordered online and, in some cases, delivered as soon as the next business day. It can be advantageous to keep an extra supply of netting and frame pieces on hand in the event that parts become damaged.

Batting cages consist or two primary features – the net and the frame. All pieces can be purchased separately so that repair can be done without having to replace the whole cage. When ordering replacement materials, you should take note of the size needed, as there is a variety of sizes available for both nets and frames.

Netting can be purchased by the precut panel or piece. Primary types of material for netting are nylon, HDPE, Kevlar, and waterproof polymer. Because a batting cage is only as strong as its net, the choice of netting is important when deciding which product will suit your needs.

Batting cage frames can be purchased as separate pieces of gauged steel or galvanized steel tubing and cut to fit the prescribed size or purchases in a pre-measured kit. Frames are made to withstand weather and rust and come in a range of lengths and diameters. When purchasing a batting cage kit, make sure that all of the necessary connecting hardware will be included.

There are many options in choosing a batting cage kit. Certain materials in the netting or coating on the frame may have to be ordered online, depending on your location.

Batting Cages Info provides detailed information about batting cage equipment and indoor, outdoor, portable, and tunnel batting cages for sale. Batting Cages Info is the sister site of Trampolines Web.

Baseball Lessons For Hire - Good Or Bad?

Derek Jeter HurricaneMachine.com

By Mike Posey

Things have certainly changed in youth and high school baseball over the past twenty-five years. When I first started coaching high school baseball none of our players hired outside hitting or pitching instruction. Today, it seems like everyone has an instructor and it starts in little leagues. In fact, most towns now have baseball/softball facilities that offer instruction. It has certainly changed the way things work, but does it help?

It's not unusual to receive several calls during a week asking if I offer paid instruction or requesting a good reference to someone that might offer lessons. Good instruction is not cheap. The top instructors offer 30 to 45 minute lessons that range from $35-65. Many instructors at facilities require monthly contracts to be signed and payment to be made up front.

Over the past several years I have been studying this trend of paid instruction and find it interesting. In my research I have found both good and bad. I realize our players need instruction and if parents are willing to pay for the instruction I would encourage it, especially in the off season. The off season is the best time to work on skill development when hitters/pitchers can be free from the everyday worries of competing for a position or excelling in a game. I don't mind instruction during the season for younger players, but for older varsity players I would prefer they work hard in practices and then work individually on their own time during the season. There can be a distraction when players hear terminology each day at practice and go to an instructor at night/weekend that might use different teaching terms. It can be confusing for players. Hitting is reaction and good hitters need to be free of thoughts about mechanics when they are in a game. For pitchers, we need to know their pitch load during the week to protect their arms and outside instruction during the season for a varsity player adds to the wear and tear on the pitching arm. Also, after a 2 ½ to 3 hour practice, another hour for instruction at night would be overloading the player. It would be better for them to hit for 15-20 minutes on their own free from distractions after practice. Hitting at home off a tee or doing toss drills can be a lot of help. During the week, players need to get home to eat, do their homework, and rest.

I remember a story one of my former players told me several years ago. He was in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and had a great year in AA ball at San Antonio hitting .296 with 18 HR. At spring training the next year he was hoping to make the big league team but was trying too hard and the results were not good. The Dodgers hitting instructor at that time, former big league slugger Reggie Smith, suggested he work with him after practice in the cages. He thought Reggie was going to change something he was doing, but instead he loaded up the automatic pitching machine with about 100 balls and told him to hit everyone hard right back up the middle. For the next 45 minutes it was him and those 100 balls in the cage. (Reggie actually left and came back) The next day he went 4-5 with two doubles. He had been taking plenty of practice swings each day, but what he really needed was to get alone for about 45 minutes and clear his head of distractions.

One of the trends I find today is parents feel they must pay someone fore their child to improve. That can be true or false. It amazes me to see someone spend $45 on a weekly lesson and wait until the next week to attend the next lesson, spending zero amount of time between lessons working on their skills. It would be better if the player spent 30-45 minutes 4-5 days a week working on their skills with no paid instruction. If a player doesn't have the desire to work to improve, especially at the high school level, they are not going to improve. Young players don't grow up today playing sand lot games in the summer or competing each afternoon with neighborhood kids. Paid instruction is taking the place of pick up games and many are getting bored with the instruction. Good instruction 2-3 times a month is plenty during the season and 4-5 times a month during the off season is fine. Spend the rest of the time practicing to improve. Nothing takes the place of a hundred ground balls or a hundred swings, if they are done properly.

So what does a parent look for if they desire to pay an instructor? First, look for someone that gives you your money's worth. Talking for 30 minutes and not doing repetitive drill work is a waste of time. With a good hitting instructor the student should be taking a lot of swings. That's the only way to improve. Really, you're paying for that person to be a coach and oversee the practice time. Changes are not needed every lesson. Some instructors feel the need to give customers "something for their money" and encourage them to keep coming back each week. These types of instructors are a waste of time and money.

Also, hitting instruction should not be wasted on style, but on improving the mechanics of the swing. Styles should only be changed when it is getting in the way of the mechanics of the swing. Make sure you hire someone that really knows the mechanics of the baseball swing.

A good pitching instructor will spend time working on the basic throwing motion before working on pitching mechanics, especially with younger players. Regardless of the player's position, proper throwing mechanics are important and young players can not improve as pitchers without good easy throwing motions. The most important thing for pitchers is control and velocity. Control is learning how to repeat good mechanics every pitch. This takes time and practice regardless of who you pay for instruction. Mechanics often change as young players go through growing spurts, especially young tall pitchers that may be growing through stages that don't allow complete body control.

Developing velocity also takes time, there is no magic formula and some of it is just plain genetics. As players get older they can be taught a proper off-season long-toss program to improve their arm strength and begin learning good exercise programs for the arm and shoulder, in addition to an overall strength and conditioning program. This should wait until the player is mentally and physically ready to handle an exercise program. Youth players can start out with fun conditioning drills at practices or a couple of shoulder/arm exercises using their glove as the weight. Make it fun as well as a learning time.

Youth league players need to spend time practicing (and throwing) the fast ball to develop good arm strength. When control of the fastball has been accomplished they can then learn a good change up. The curveball should not be taught until they are at least 14-15 years old depending on their physical development.

With video technology today, more parents need to take advantage of video. Players need to see themselves to develop a mental image of what they are doing during the activity. Take video during the lesson and also during some games. Then spend some time looking at the videos and making comparisons. It's also good to use the DVR to video some good professional or college players on TV. Slow down the video to study their motions then compare them. This is a great way to learn and improve.

Building a Batting Cage

By Jason Gluckman

Batting cages are mostly used by baseball or softball coaches and players for practice. There are several types of batting cages, including indoor, outdoor, portable, and tunnel batting cages. Completely enclosed batting cages need more space. There is a simple net behind the batsman.

Weather is an important factor in choosing a batting cage. Indoor batting cages are required if the weather is bad. Portable batting cages are useful for players who frequently participate in games; they can practice any time with the portable cage.

In order to build a batting cage, one must understand its main features. The netting and frame are the two important features of a batting cage. The frame used in a batting cage is constructed with high-strength, adjustable aluminum tubes. In outdoor batting cages, the frame is coated with a special weather?resistant powder coating. Manufacturers are conducting tests with batting cage materials for strength and durability. The material used for netting should be durable enough to withstand adverse weather conditions. The net material may be chosen according to the application. The netting used is often black in color. Nylon material is used for netting in indoor batting cages. Polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, polyester Kevlar, and KVX200 are other common netting materials. Batting cage nettings now available are weather coated with polyurethane and water repellants and spray-coated with resins to ensure longer life. Construction is another factor that determines the durability of a batting cage.

Flooring is usually made of polypropylene stretchable material attached to the net. The cage entrance needs black PVC-coated chain link. Some batting cages use pitching machines, which are either coin- or token-operated pitching machines. The number of pitches in the machine can be selected. Pneumatic ball return systems automatically return the balls to the pitching machine.

Many dealers provide do-it-yourself batting cage kits with proper instructions, which contain all the materials for a standard batting cage.

Batting Cages provides detailed information on Batting Cages, Indoor Batting Cages, Outdoor Batting Cages, Batting Cages Equipment and more. Batting Cages is affiliated with Cheap Baseball Tickets.

Batting Cages - Tips For Buying

www.BattingCagesDirect.com

By Andy Brock

Batting cages are not something that most people usually buy for their backyards. Some people buy these if they are members of a baseball or softball team or if they just want their children to enjoy playing baseball without worrying about breaking their next door neighbor's window.

Since a batting cage is not a usual purchase for your backyard and it is something that you buy probably only once in your life, then you should know the considerations for buying a batting cage. If you want to know some tips for buying batting cages, read the next few lines.

Consider the place where you can put the batting cage. You have to keep in mind that you are buying something huge. You have to know if your backyard can accommodate that big a size, with enough space left for doing other things. If you think it cannot fit into your yard or will make your yard look full and cramped, then choose another location.
You should also identify your needs. What is your reason for buying a batting cage? If your reason is to encourage your child's enjoyment of playing baseball, then you can buy the small-sized baseball cage. But if your reason is to have a safe and protected place where a whole baseball or softball team can practice, then you might want to look into bigger batting cages.
Another thing to consider is the netting. Some batting cages include netting while others don't. Choose the netting which is made of strong and sturdy materials especially if the people who will use it are adults who can hit the baseball really hard. You will also need a heavy-duty net if you will use the net often. But if the people who will frequently use the net are children, then it is okay to buy a normal type of netting because they do not hit the ball as hard as adults.
Research on the different types of batting cages and their corresponding costs. This is important since there are so many available batting cages and there is a very big possibility that you could choose the wrong one or it is not worth the amount you paid. It will not hurt if you will spend some time browsing over the internet and checking prices of batting cages. This might seem boring or even tedious but in the long run, it will do you much good instead of jumping ahead immediately and buying a baseball cage without knowing enough about what you just purchased.

If you would like to learn more you can read about batting cages and practical tips on using a batting cage to improve hitting.

Benefits of Portable Batting Cages

By Jason Gluckman

Many advanced baseball and softball teams use portable batting cages to ensure adequate training while on the road. Just like standard batting cages, portable models act as a virtual catcher, helping to control the movement of baseballs and softballs. With batting cages, teams can focus less on chasing down errant balls, and more time fine-tuning their batting skills.

Portable batting cages hold many advantages over other types, including standard indoor and outdoor models. Portable batting cages can be used for baseball or softball teams traveling from field to field, as well as for families who pursue outdoor activities and who like the flexibility that portable batting cages offer. Portable batting cages are functional and convenient because of their capacity to be dismantled and stored when not in use.

In addition, portable batting cages can be purchased at a variety of prices, which correspond to various sizes and styles. Portable batting cages vary in price. The difference in price is usually determined by the size of the overall batting cage (by frame length, width, and height) and the type and quality of the netting. For schools or teams planning to use their batting cages frequently, it would be beneficial to purchase the most durable quality available. For a family who might not use their batting cage on a regular basis, but who likes to have it from time to time, it would be less important to have an expensive, high-quality cage.

Portable batting cages can provide many years of use with minimal maintenance. Seldom do cages require major overhauling. Batting cage equipment can be purchased conveniently at a hardware or sporting goods store, as well as online. With very little upkeep, portable batting cages can provide years of use and enjoyment.

Amazing Tips For Baseball Team Players

By Ruth Cracknell

It is important for all baseball team players to be able to run the bases well. They also need to be able to slide. Both these aspects of the game are discussed in this article.

On two-base hits, the batter makes his turn at 1st just as he does for a single-with a small dip to the right. On a triple-a ball the batter knows is going to be a triple-the dip at 1st is ignored.

If, after leaving 2nd, a runner intends to round 3rd or continue to the plate, he should again make the little dip some 15 to 20 feet in front of the base. When a runner, however, is trying for an inside-the-park home run, he should run the bases in a tight circle, pivoting as much as he can at every base.

As a general rule, a base runner is "on his own" when the ball is in front of him. In other words, he-and not the coach-judges whether an attempt to advance should be made. Once the ball is in back of a runner, however, he should rely entirely on the instruction of the base coach. If a batter hits a ball into the right field corner, for example, he should look at the 3rd base coach as he approaches 2nd base and again as he leaves it. He should not look back at the ball!

Above all, a player should be taught to run hard and keep running until he either arrives safely at a base, or has clearly been put out. Don't forget, too, that a batter has an opportunity to run when:
1. The catcher drops a third strike.
2. "Ball Four" goes through the catcher. The ball is "in play" and, theoretically at least, the batter could circle the bases and score.

Sliding
Many young baseball team players hesitate to learn to slide because they are fearful of being hurt. Actually, the boy who slides correctly has learned a skill that helps prevent injury. There are two ways to slide-head first and feet first.

When a runner dives toward a base on his stomach, he goes straight in, or to one side and reaches for the base with a hand. It's not too difficult a slide, but it's hard on the stomach and not too efficient, except when used to avoid being picked off base by a pitcher. Sliding feet first, on the other hand, takes a little practice and is a necessary skill for the ball player-amateur or professional. There are two basic methods.

1. The Hook Slide (or "fadeaway").
This is the most popular and probably the most useful. The body goes well to the side of the base as one toe reaches for a corner, making a small target for the infielder's tag.

2. The Leg-under, or Bent-leg Slide.
This slide is used mostly when a runner wants to go "straight in" to a base. It also enables the runner to come quickly to his feet in the event the ball eludes the defense. It's best for players to learn how to slide as soon as possible, for the earlier the years, the lighter and more supple the body. Most boys, if they wait too long to start sliding, will find that they can only slide on one side, which is a disadvantage.

Master these two aspects of the game, and you will become one of a select band of valuable baseball team players.

Baseball Coaching Tips - Practice Hitting Vs Game Hitting

www.Training-bats.com

By Joe Brockhoff

Let's understand three important principles when we talk about how to hit a baseball:

1. Mechanics, which include form and technique
2. Judgmental principles
3. Confidence

When a player is hitting off of a tee or in soft toss, this involves only mechanics. There are no judgmental or confidence factors at all involved. Whereas, in the game, judgmental principles may be even more important than mechanics. This involves reading the pitch and taking appropriate action.

Here is one of my best baseball coaching tips. The player who does only short-toss and t-hitting misses out on a major part of hitting, and that is judging the pitch in space (trajectory). When we practice with soft toss, it is "pitch - hit". But when we hit in the game, the sequence is "pitch - trajectory - hit".

And no player can perform at his best unless he has confidence. Tension forces a player to do things he would not do during practice. So how do we make the transition from practice to the game?

Hitting is a conditioned reflex. A hitter must practice to "groove" his stroke, and then trust it. In other words, 'no stinkin thinkin' at the plate. It's see-ball, hit-ball, have fun!

Toss and tee hitting only provide practice of mechanics, and the hitter needs much more. Not only does he need to see pitching from a distance, but he also needs to have some pressure put on him during his practice sessions.

In our baseball hitting tips, we can add a measure of pressure on the hitter in a batting cage by using a Power-10 series, where he works to hit 8 out of 10 pitches hard. This puts pressure on him to get a high score. He can also run a series of power-10's using out youth baseball hitting drills. This will also increase his confidence level.

There is an old saying that is so true:

Play like you practice and practice like you play. This was never more important than in the game of baseball. So here are some ideas to help accomplish this.

1. Batters should have some practice where they get some distance from the pitcher, either a machine or live pitcher.
2. Put some tension in the practice.
3. In every batting cage practice session, include a "Power-10", 7 or 8 hard hits out of 10 to increase confidence level and a good feeling of performance.
4. Use practice that simulates game situations and encourages players to feel good about their performance.

Former Tulane Hall of Fame Baseball Coach, Joe Brockhoff, fully explains his baseball hitting drills with the Super 8 Hitting System, completely demonstrated with videos and hitting drills to help you hit with more power and raise your batting average. http://www.LearnBaseballHitting.com

Can't Afford a Batting Cage? Buy a pitching simulator machine for under $200

BatAction Baseball Training Machine provides batters with a backyard or indoor hitting station that can be used year round. Check out these features:

1. The BatAction Machine has a large circle of ball movement - This large path of ball movement allows the batter to see, hit and track the ball before and after each swing. The BatAction ball movement closely simulates live pitching!

2. The BatAction Machine allows the batter to read swing contact. The ball is suspended in mid-air without cables, string, or ropes. This unique patented design allows the ball to react to bat contact much like a real ball. The batter receives instant feedback as to the quality and power of every swing. The batter can immediately read the ball after contact to see if the ball hit was a line drive, ground ball or fly ball. This instant feedback is extremely useful and beneficial to rapid skill improvement and bat speed development.

3. Every swing is a challenge - The BatAction Machine features a moving ball with adjustable speeds. Players really love the challenge and fun of seeing and hitting a moving ball. The harder a player hits the ball, the faster it will return. This ball movement keeps the batter challenged and motivated to practice more and more.

4. The BatAction Machine fast moving ball makes every swing a challenge - The BatAction Machine features a moving ball with adjustable speeds. Players really love the challenge and fun of seeing and hitting a moving ball. The harder a player hits the ball, the faster it will return. This ball movement keeps the batter challenged and motivated to practice more and more.

5. The BatAction Machine is a great trainer for planned or impulse training - The BatAction is often used as a hitting station for team training. It is great for these planned activities. But, one of the benefits that makes it one of the most popular home trainers ever, is the fact that it can be set up as a hitting station in the backyard. This makes the BatAction Machine always available to a hitter for fun and recreational use. These impulse workouts can be done alone, even when Dad or Mom is not at home. This is why the Bat Action Machine is often called the Backyard Basketball Goal for baseball and softball players. It is so much fun to hit that kids spend hours and hours of their free time hitting the fast moving ball. These fun workouts are the reason that BatAction Machine owners are some of the most dominate hitters in the game today.

Baseball Drills - Creating Bat Lag Vs Bat Drag

www.AdvancedSkillsTee.com

By Nate Barnett

Baseball terminology should be a class taught in college. Maybe I'm more aware of all of the different terms because it's a game I'm most familiar with, or maybe there is just an extraordinary amount of verbiage to learn. Nevertheless, I'd like to discuss a couple important hitting terms that should be understood as you're working on your various baseball drills. The difference between bat lag and bat drag are immense. And because of the similar sound, they ofter get mixed up. Bad mistake. Let me help explain them both by developing a definition for each.

Bat Lag:

Bat lag is what all good hitters look to develop while hitting a baseball. As the hands move into the hitting zone it's important to throw the knob of the bat at the baseball. You may be familiar with that concept as it's a common phrase (throwing the knob). Doing this produces a result of the hands leading the barrel of the bat which creates whip and bat speed in the baseball swing. When looking at a picture of a hitter nearing the contact position, look for the hands to be in front (more towards the pitcher) of the elbows of the hitter. The barrel of the bat will be remaining significantly behind the hands and enters the zone last.

Bat Drag:

Bat drag has the opposite effect on the hitter's swing as compared to bat lag. This is a common problem with younger hitters who lack strength or proper training. Bat drag is easy to spot when looking at a picture (from a side angle looking at the hitter's chest) as you will quite likely see the hitters elbows "dragging" the hands and bat behind into the hitting zone. In this case, bat speed will be minimal and a sweeping action with the bat will occur. This problem often is accompanied by a collapsing back shoulder.

What's unfortunate about the bat drag problem is that it can be years before a young hitter gets this mistake corrected. Reason being is that some success can be achieved at the younger levels as pitching is slower and the bat has much more time to enter the strike zone and connect with the baseball. The problem occurs when the hitter advances into junior high and high school where pitching velocity is greater. The mechanical failure created by bat drag becomes exploited and often hitters find their batting averages and consistency dropping very quickly.

There are thousands of pictures and video clips of MLB hitters all over the web. The best way to learn what this bat lag and bat drag look like is to observe what big leaguers are doing and compare their hands with those of a younger and less experienced hitter. Then, go to work solving the problem with a focus on some good baseball drills on the topic.

Looking for Cheap Batting Cages? Here's some Basic Advice

By Jason Gluckman

Cheap batting cages can be found in a number of places. One option is to look in your local newspaper for garage sales or in the ads under sporting equipment for sale. Garage sales would probably be a good place to look for smaller, cheap batting cages. It might also be possible to buy cheap batting cages from a school or recreation facility during an equipment upgrade.

Another option for finding cheap batting cages is to look online. Many sports equipment dealers have web sites, as well as individuals who are selling their sports equipment on the Internet, many of whom will be able to offer good deals. However, you should be careful that you obtain a warranty or guarantee on the item you are purchasing, especially if the item is used. If the item is of lesser quality than you were led to believe, it will be necessary for you to have a means to return it and get your money back.

Even used batting cages typically cost hundreds of dollars, but discounts may be available if you build one yourself. If you’re interested in making your own batting cage, pipe for the frame can be purchased at a hardware store and netting can be purchased from a sports equipment dealer. You can purchase complete batting cage kits online, with varying prices, depending on the size and quality of the cage. Instructions for putting together your own batting cage are usually fairly simple. In addition, you will experience the satisfaction of having built something impressive and useful with your own handss

Sports Psychology - How to Prevent Burn Out in Young Athletes

By Jay Granat

Every week, I see athletes who are performing poorly, because they are burnt out in their chosen sport. In many instances, they are unaware or unwilling to admit this fact. And, frequently, their parents are in denial of the fact that their child is mentally and physically spent. Some parents do not want to accept the fact that their youngster is mentally and physically exhausted.

Burn out is usually caused by over training and by competing too often. Some young athletes are simply overwhelmed with pressure from parents, coaches, friends, the media, boosters and teammates. Some can not juggle academics, sports and their social lives. Some have just been playing and competing for too long.

There are a number of cures for burn out. Sometimes, a short break is precisely what is needed. In other instances, the athlete needs to develop a new philosophy about his or her sport and about competing. In other instances, a coaching change is a good idea.

When I counsel athletes, parents and coaches, we explore what is right, best and most comfortable for all parties concerned.

Many athletes benefit from sports psychology training which teaches them how to manage the mental aspects of their sport, how to avoid burn out, how to be resilient and how to conserve and wisely utilize their mental toughness and their powers of concentration and focus.

Some kids need a new motivator or a new challenge to remain interested in their sport: Learning a new position, mastering a new skill, playing in a new league or setting some new goals are examples of new motivators which can have a positive impact on youngsters.

Last, burn out can be avoided and managed if the parents, coach, athlete, trainer and mental coach can all get on the same page and work together as a team. I spend a lot of time helping athletes and their teams to function in a positive a constructive manner. Once this happens, burn out can be avoided and the athlete can be freed up to reach his or her fullest potential.

The Many Types of Pitching Machines

By Jakob Culver

There are many pitches in the game of baseball. To become a master at hitting all of the types of pitching, a good way to practice is a pitching machine. There are many different machines out there that can pitch in many different styles at many different speeds. Practice with these machines are bound to make perfect.

You can find pitching machines at the local batting cages. Many people use the batting cages because it is fairly cheap. You could also get one for your own private use and place it in your back yard. You may also look into machines that the pro’s use, but they are surely more expensive.

Pitching machines for softball are available. There are also machines for curve balls. Since the curve ball is a very hard pitch to hit off of, this machine can be very useful.

Almost anyone can use the pitching machine. This makes it handy to use for even little leaguers. By allowing kids to use the machine they are learning all the strategies needed in batting.

There are even pitching machines for wiffle ball. The pitching machine can not only help your batting swing for the sport, but could actually teach you the sport. If you are really involved in batting sports then this will be a great investment for you and your team.

Pitching machines come in many different sizes and power strengths. You can get a pitching machine from most sporting goods stores. If they do not have them in stock they can be ordered.
